Rollin’ in my 5.0
Rollin’ in my 5.0
The phrase, “Rollin’… in my five point 0” has become a crossover catch phrase in both American car and pop culture. Some are too young to know what it means but this week’s Fierce Ford Friday Mustang is a pristine example of what one would have “rolled” in during the late 80’s while listening to Vanilla Ice’s “rapping.” This 1988 Mustang GT is as good of a snapshot of that era as the song that was inspired by it. The year before, the Mustang had undergone a re-design both inside and out and was given a sleeker, more aerodynamic look. Model year 1987 was also when Ford got its fuel injection figured out, kick-starting the enormous 5.0 Mustang performance aftermarket.
Small touches for the GT included the body colored triple louvered lenses that covered the taillights. The GT also sported round fog lamps and a lower aerodynamic bodyside skirting that got a blacked-out paint job on this particular “roller” owned by Mustangs Unlimited in Manchester Connecticut. Both the GT and LX Mustangs got flush-mounted quarter glass without the louvers from the previous years. This 85,000-mile GT is mostly stock, which is hard to find in a 5.0 Mustang anymore and has a mint interior that looks like the seats have never even been sat on. While the GT in Ice’s video was a white five-speed, this black GT has an AOD automatic.
While a hot car for the day, the performance of an ’88 GT pales in comparison to the current Mustang GT, but those days were simpler, far less complicated from an electronics standpoint, and still resonate in our memories most pleasantly. We could try and describe the performance of this Pony Car but will defer to the renowned poet Robert Matthew Van Winkle, aka Vanilla Ice: “‘Cause I’m sweatin’ like steam and you can feel the flow, when I’m rollin, in my 5.0!”
